It is in the heart of the tower of building A, emblematic of the Solbosch campus of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), that a couple of Peregrine Falcons has settled since 2020, overlooking at one side the campus, at the other the Bois de la Cambre
Located in the heart of Brussels, the Solbosch campus is one of the three Brussels campuses of ULB. With varied green spaces, located in the heart of the city or near natural areas, ULB manages veritable reservoirs for biodiversity that host remarkable trees, living collections of plant species and an incredible small wild fauna.
Convinced that sustainability is an imperative and a challenge for the globalized world, ULB has long made a series of commitments for a sustainable university, in tune with contemporary environmental, social and economic issues. The ULB is particularly committed to preserving and supporting the biodiversity of green spaces on all of its campuses.
This policy is reflected in particular in a differentiated management: complete elimination of phytosanitary products, diversification of species and management of invasive species, development of green roofs, principle of compensation in the event of felling, respect for nesting and flowering periods, etc. also supports measures to promote and raise awareness of respect for green spaces by campus users. The nesting of the Peregrine Falcons is therefore hailed as an engaging result of this policy of sustainable management of green spaces.
This approach will allow academics, researchers or students to analyze in more detail the life and diet of Peregrines during their nesting period. The analysis of falcon prey will ornithologists allow to feed their knowledge of other bird species living in Brussels.
The pair of Peregrine Falcons that nested in 2019, 2020 and 2021 on the Solbosch campus of the ULB moved this spring 2022. They breed 650 m away, at the Saint Adrien church. It is therefore not possible to broadcast images of the brood at this time. We will nevertheless continue to give you news of this falcons family.
